anti-vegan craft

image

In one of my 70s craft books I made this gruesome discovery - a “beautiful” napkin ring made from a femur. Acckkk. It says “When you’ve made the soup - make a “Smart Napkin Ring”. This is taking waste-not/want-not to the extreme, don’t you think?

And how many craft materials lists begin: “The head of a femur ; a small hacksaw”. The thing I find creepiest is that it doesn’t specify which manner of creature the femur should come from. I mean, if you were married to Tony Soprano, you could potentially use a human femur, right? Or if you wanted a tiny napkin ring for your Barbie - you could use a Guinea Pig femur.

Next: “Boil all the bone marrow jelly out of the bone - this will take several boilings in fresh water - until there is no sign of fat left in the bone.” Can you imagine the stench in your house after all that bone-boiling? Euw.

“Mummy, can I have a peanut butter sandwich?”
“Can you fix it yourself, Chuckie dear? Mommy is busy hacksawing a femur bone for the Thanksgiving dinner table right now.”

And then, for all that gore and effort - you end up with this:

Which, in my humble (and vegetarian) opinion - is freakin’ hideous. See? It even has ‘H’ for hideous on it in glitter. Nice.

I appreciate the idea that all bits of the animal are used, e.g. eat the meat, wear the skin, boil the bones for stock etc., However, I feel that even a chopped up toilet roll would make a more appealing serviette ring.  Blargy!

i do appreciate the ‘waste not want not’ philosophy when it comes to meat, but that is definitely taking it too far. eek.

Ew that is gross and just plain unattractive.  Although I can imagine many a frugal housewife whipping up a few of those little bad boys.  My mum was probably one of them!

I love it!

Even at the same second this napkin “ring” is offending me, there’s something about it that just strikes me as ancient and inherently useful about using bones for tasks.

That said, if we were cavewomen, I’d rather have a stone one.
