birds in her head

(image from the book Fashion and Surrealism)

***

She has new handmade coffee cups, from the church fair.

She has birds in her head where her brain used to be. You will find her standing in traffic, trying to remember.

She has fake bee hives, made from porcelain. She also has a ceramic heart. She has a friend who hates kitsch and hides these objects when he visits.

So many things are offensive.

She had an egg-cup she bought in a small village in Turkey. It had deer painted on it, and trees. Yesterday it got broken. She bought it 14 years ago, but yesterday it got broken. Why yesterday? Did the egg-cup break because she bought the coffee cups? The karmic wheel of household items?

So many things are fragile.

The place she bought that egg-cup, in that small village in Turkey - the potter had a “hair museum” - a wall where he hung snippets of hair from all the tourists who visited his shop. Red hair, blonde hair, mostly black hair. He was very proud of it, but it made her feel a little queasy. He chased her with scissors, but she wouldn’t submit.

So many things are inexplicable.

She carries a small camera everywhere she goes, so small she can hide it up her sleeve. She is devoted and greedy.

She takes photos of you when you are not looking.
