:’fabric show-off’ doll:

image

We recently had a bedroom change-a-round here. Willoughby now has his own room in the sunroom, which meant Fraser and I have reclaimed the biggest bedroom and Magnus is in the smaller bedroom. Both boys seem very happy to have their own spaces. Because the big bedroom was painted a shade of blue I find a little grey and depressing with a cool-for-kids-but-naff-for-adults star frieze around the walls - I’m doing a spot of redecorating in there. I want to paint the walls a sort of warm-almost turquoise blue. Blue but warming blue, not gloomy blue. 1940s blue. Does anyone get what I mean?

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the project. When I was a teenager and a twenty-something, my bedroom was always my sanctuary, my hide-away, my place of peace. I feel like since we had children - creating a beautiful space in our room has come bottom of the loooonnnggg list of priorities and things that need doing. But now that Magnus is that much older and doesn’t spend much time in our bed, and since we had our massive declutter and the house is getting more and more organised and calm....well, it’s time to put energy into our space again. (I guess that’s symbolic, too, that we are slowly claiming back more couple time as well.)

Anyway, (I don’t seem to be able to introduce a photo, or describe an object without some huge spiel! Heh.) I found this wonderful 1970s fabric at the op-shop a while back, but just a little bit of it. You know how it is when you find just a little fabric you love - not enough to make something substantial....you don’t need another pouch or small bag...you have patched and embellished all of your clothes to within an inch of their lives...(I know I could get into patchwork - but I don’t think I have the patience or the skills.)

...so I made this plain little doll. She’s about 30cm tall. She’s for my bedroom, to hang on the soon-to-be-painted wall. She’s all about the green floral - so I can see it every day. I like her plain, with no face - she’s kind of like a ‘Steiner meets the Partridge Family’ doll. And I think I’ll make her a couple of sisters, in slightly different shapes when other gorgeous but small bits of fabric come my way.

Happy Wednesday, friends, can you feel that cool autumn tang in the air?

I like the way that even though she doesn’t have a face, the floral pattern suggests one—I see green drag queen eyelashes on the left, , an asterix eye on the right, and a down-turned mouth!

Hey, I am a wife, mother, knitter, geocacher and college student.  In my college studies I try to do as many projects as I can on things that I already know about so that 1) I save time researching and 2) I already know what I am talking about and don’t sound dumb.
Anyway, my point is that this semester I am taking a speech class and for my persuasive presentation I am going to be persuading the teacher and other students that knitting is not just a hobby for grandmothers.
We have to use a powerpoint presentation and I wanted to see if I could get permission to use the picture of your knit/purl knuckle tattoos (to show how cool knitters really are, lol!)and link to your site on my works cited page.

Thanks,
Kelley

that doll looks amazing, what a great way to show off fabric. now I think you should do a series of them!

I know what you mean about blue (one of my favourite colours), I can’t wait to see the before and after pictures.

fact: I don’t have a bedroom and I do miss the sense of sanctuary you refer to.  we have an open plan everything space including the living area, computer desk, and dinning area.  it only turns into our bedroom when we unroll the futon.  its a great way to get the most function out of limited space but oh, sigh, a bedroom!
