:gluts:

Glut - yes it rhymes with a bad word and sounds like something gross, but no - a glut is a very good thing! A glut is that rare thing whereby a person who attempts to grow food for her family very occassionally has success with something, and then at the peak or end of the season HAS SO MANY OF SOMETHING SHE HAS TO COOK HER BUTT OFF TO KEEP UP!

We have had something of a tomato glut here - which has meant that those recipes in Cuisine magazine which begin “take three kilos of fresh tomatoes”, which - when tomatoes cost $7.99 per kilo make me snort with derision about food snobbery and chagrin at how I’m not rich enough to spend $24 on tomatoes for one dish...we-e-e-ellll - come glut time - I can make those silly recipes.

Gluts are cool.

Unfortunately, I haven’t managed a basil glut this year - but I do have enough to make one good big batch of pesto. First I just need to save up for the gold-plated pine nuts and parmesan. (Is it just me or is the food bill creeping up every week lately?)

Tips on pinenuts. 1.Get a whole lot from pick ‘n mix and put the peanuts number on the bag (or weigh it yourself). Make sure you go to the checkout operater that looks least likely to know what pinenuts are. You’ve also got a good defense if you get busted. 2.Use a cheaper nut. We use cashews, walnuts etc. instead of pinenuts and the pesto tastes just as good.
